I always try to look for the positives in life. However, I’ve just been through (fingers crossed we have turned the corner) a period of life that would try most people. Im only just blogging about it as I’ve been just a little overwhelmed. Having said that, you can always find someone having a worse time than yourself.
Most of the things that have happened, happen to most people – my mother had a mini stoke, my dog was ill for a week, my son was ill, the water heating broke, etc, etc. I think it was the fact that everything happened all at once.
Do you know that feeling when you start to suspect you have a target on your back or someone is sending you very bad vibes?
And then, the thing to top the lot! On 14 May, I was sitting in my lounge drinking a cup of tea, after dropping my son at the station for his train to school. I’d just spoken to my husband, who works abroad, so I know it was 8.10am. I heard the dustbin lorry come up the road and I remember thinking goodness someone had a heavy bin, then I was out of my chair with a sick inner knowing that it had hit my car. Well it wasn’t just my car, it was the house as well!!!
Cue three fire engines, an ambulance, the police, numerous council vehicles and the local councilor. I think I was on the phone five hours that day and three the next. In between taking my mother to her various medical appointments, I have been sorting out the aftermath of the incident and am likely to be doing so for several months.
A second’s inattention on the part of the dust bin lorry driver, i.e. not applying the handbrake, has caused so much angst and hassle. The car is back, but it will never be the same, and we are still waiting for a date for the rebuild of the front of the house.
Positives? My friends and neighbours have been wonderful, I was insured, I will get my bedroom decorated and most importantly no one was hurt.
I walked the dog this morning and gloried in the wonderful weather. Everything will turn out fine in the end, I might just have a few more grey hairs.
Glad you have such supportive friends and neighbours, Morton and impressed that you’ve found so many positives out of what must have been a frightening event. Hope life is filled with all good things from now on! : )

Great that you are being positive. Problems don’t seem to arrive singly, do they! It all must have been trying at the least. Thank goodness for valuable friends. Fingers truly crossed for the future.

Thank you! I felt better when the structural engineer said the house wasn’t going to fall down! A bit of a drastic way to get five firemen in my bedroom!

Houses and cars can be fixed. Thank goodness nobody was killed or injured. I’m sure it will be fine in the end – and you’ve got great material to use in a novel plus a series of articles about how to find a good insurance company i.e. one that pays up! Thinking of you and sending lots of hugs. Stay positive. You’ve got a lot to look forward to.

Thanks, Sue. Not sure about recommending insurance companies – can’t believe the hoops even though I’d done nothing to cause the incident! A dustbin lorry features in my current wip 😉 and if I ever write crime the dustman is for it 😱

Quick copyright the story and sell it to a company that does TV ads for insurance companies. Then they can do an advert for one with a better level of service than you’ve received!
Hope it’s all sorted out for you soon. Xx
