This week I’m joined by Helena Dixon as she tells us about where she writes her very popular Miss Underhay cozy mystery series. Over to Helena …

For several years I’ve been based in the Black Country, a small, industrialised area with a rich heritage in the heart of the UK. I spent at least six months of the year travelling back and forth to the coast of South Devon where we have a touring caravan. My writing world is set in that area, Dartmouth, Kingswear, Paignton and Torquay and we had been looking to relocate there for quite a few years.

The time was finally right, and we put our house up for sale and along came the pandemic. My research trips were halted for a time and when they could resume several of the places, I needed to visit were off-limits meaning I had to juggle the planned order of my contracted books.
I usually wrote in my office when at my home in the Black Country and in my caravan while I was away. Now with the house sold and everything in boxes, I’ve ended up writing anywhere I can place my laptop. The new house needs lots of work so I’m office-less although I do now at least have a desk. My precious research files however are scattered throughout the house and stored in various boxes until we can build the shelves in what will become my writing nook.
I can’t wait to get all my things set up again so I can find my highlighters, post it notes and notebooks. Teddy, my doggy edipaworial assistant will also be very happy to see things settling down.

The Miss Underhay series is now on book 8 with the latest release this month (February 2022) of Murder in First Class and with Book 9, Murder at the Country Club available for preorder very soon All the books can be read as standalone reads.

About Book 8, Murder In First Class

All aboard a train bound for… murder.
Kitty Underhay is looking forward to a week of long lunches and wedding planning with her husband-to-be, Captain Matthew Bryant. But the plan is derailed when he is called on to collect a former comrade-in-arms, arriving on the 15:50 from Paddington. As the train bearing Simon Travers pulls up to the platform, a piercing scream rises over the screech of its brakes. Travers is dead in his seat, a dagger in his heart.
Who gave this defenceless man a one-way ticket to the next life? And why? And could Matt’s close connection put him at risk? Only a few individuals had access to Travers’s compartment, and Kitty must find out which of these seemingly benign passengers is in fact a cross-country killer.
But when Kitty’s prime suspect, the travelling salesman with no merchandise, is found murdered, she is stumped. Until she makes the connection between the two victims and realises that this murderer has an even more deadly destination in mind. Can she stop them before they strike again? Or will Kitty’s own next stop be the graveyard?
Available for preorder now and releasing Feb 16th You can get the book from https://t.co/y1VrTTeiXD

I adore these covers: very retro and eye-catching. I laughed at Helen’s edipawrial assistant!! I haven’t read any of Helen’s books yet. Which would she recommend I start with? I see they are standalone, but does she have a favourite?

I would start with Murder at the Dolphin Hotel so you can follow the mystery of Kitty’s mother’s disappearance.

Great blog – I so admire Helena for continuing to write despite moving house, and all the upheaval that goes with it! I’m also behind on the series, although not as far behind as you Morton lol! It’s a great series, and although they are all standalone, it is worth reading them in order if you have the choice! In my opinion 🙂

Yes, I’m also in awe at Nell’s writing so many good books despite all the upheaval. And I just love the books, especially the bright vibrant covers.
