Nurturing Your Sense Of Smell

Some of my readers might not know that once upon a time I trained as a therapist. After talking to quite a few friends who are struggling with their positivity and mood at the moment, I decided to start a short series of posts to give some simple tips and gentle ideas to increase your wellbeing. Please let me know if any of these are a help to you in the comments and share them with anyone else who is struggling.
Part of the key to feeling positive begins as soon as you open your eyes in the morning, or if you are having difficulty sleeping, as soon as you decide to get up and get dressed. I am going to start this series of posts by talking about nurturing your senses and this week in particular your sense of smell. Please be aware that some of your senses will be more dominant than others, so not every idea will work for you.
Treat yourself to toiletries with a scent you love. Concentrate during your morning shower on the scent of your shower gel or soap. I use solid shampoo and these come in some lovely scents, which adds yet another level of stimulation for my nostrils. The idea is, of course, that if you are focussing on these delightful perfumes you are drowning out more of your possible negative thoughts. Continue this focus for as long as you can with your deodorant, face cream, body lotion and, if you use it, perfume.

If you find that your sense of smell focus helps, you can always reinforce this during the day by lighting a candle or wax melt. And if you find yourself drifting into negativity then try focussing back on a scent to improve your mood. The more you use this technique, the stronger it will get.

Also, if you happen to be a writer, don’t forget to include scents in your manuscript too.
Focus and see what happens. I’ll be back next time with sense of sight.
