I’ve not been blogging for couple of weeks, mainly due to the effects of a horrible virus kindly donated by our grandson! I have not felt like spending time on my laptop as I’ve had a fuzzy head and sore eyes.
In my last published blog, I promised to talk about some books that have helped me over the years. Julia Cameron has produced a number of books with different themes that I have used successfully both to help my writing and my wellbeing.
The first one I came across was The Artist’s Way, which many people in the writing world will be familiar with. This book aims to free up your writing and creativity.
On a recent visit to The Poetry Pharmacy in Bishops Castle, Shropshire the other day, the latest Julia Cameron to be added to my collection – The Artist’s Way for Retirement – almost leapt off the display table and demanded that I buy it! This book guides you through the phases of your life and gets you to write about them, whilst stimulating new thought and direction.
I have been fascinated by the process that my mind has been going through whilst working on memories from my early years and this has even fed into my family history research, leading me to find those little details that add so much to a history.
My mother wrote her memoirs and thanks to this book, I am well on the way to writing mine.
If you fancy exploring the Julia Cameron methods for creativity, mental wellbeing and freeing up writing, I would suggest picking a title from her collection the theme of which appeals most and giving it a go. I personally don’t tie myself into the timescales in the book as I’m rather good at beating myself up if I don’t achieve a target, so I proceed at my own pace and it seems to work just as well. The picture below show the books I have worked with over the years and I can wholeheartedly recommend them.
