Pondering this morning about where inspiration comes from. And yes, I will get back to my wellbeing series soon, I promise. I’m not actively writing fiction at the moment, as I’m researching and writing up a multigenerational family history for a relative, but that doesn’t stop the ideas arriving.
I remember reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic where she talks about ideas swirling around in the ether ready to download to writers and I do wonder…
How else can I go into the shower one morning thinking about the normal admin and “to do list of life” and write down the following when I emerge from the shower cubicle?

“I keep having the feeling I’m supposed to be doing something else.”
“But what?” Mandy looked at her watch and I guessed it was probably time for her to do her ovulation test as she and Kieron were trying for a baby and struggling.
“Well, there is the thing … this is going to sound completely mad. I keep feeling I need to go on to the ramparts and check the ammunition and for sightings of the enemy.”
Mandy looked at Alex with a face that said she thought madness had indeed set in. “What?”
“Yup, it sounds crazy, but that’s what I keep thinking and in my mind’s eye I’m walking along a stone castle wall.”

Where does it come from?
Idea generation has never really been a problem for me, it’s more the persistence to finish a project I struggle with.
Ideas have arrived for me before in coffee shops after hearing a snippet of conversation, whilst reading non-fiction books, as a result of a piece of music, just walking in nature, or seeing a shop name. Even my family history research generates numerous book and story ideas, too many for me to ever write up. But, the most common place for me to get ideas? In the shower! I’m starting to think my shower is a downloading portal for the swirling ideas Elizabeth Gilbert talks about!
